I am looking for 22 (20 paddlers, a steerperson and a drummer) serious individuals to participate in the 2010 Dragon Boat Race held annually at Lake Lanier. The event is usually held early September on a Saturday. There will be a total of 4 practices spread out over the months of July and August that will more than likely be held on Sunday afternoons. Two of the four practices will be mandatory for each team member. There will be a $20 fee per person. Team tee shirts will be provided along with food at each of the practices and the event itself. Our Kali focus is on the Inosanto/Lacosta blend (John Lacosta was one of Guro Dan Inosanto's main instructors in Kali). We practice with stick (single or double) and knife but also include a great deal of the empty hand (boxing, trapping, grappling). The ancient native art of the Filipino Islands promotes the understanding of the use of weaponry as a means of developing superior body mechanics for empty hand fighting; both weaponry and empty hand are taught together because the principles are common to both and are inter-changeable. Armed or unarmed, the student learns to relate to any situation using the same concepts of body angling, positioning and flowing. Drills and techniques help students improve their sense of timing, speed, agility, awareness, balance and confidence.

Our class has evolved over time to meet the wants and needs of our participants. What might you expect when you roll in for a visit? Well, we like to keep things fresh and to focus on functional exercise. We use implements like dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, pullup bars, parallettes, resistance bands, and a Concept II Rower. We've been known to use sledgehammers, sandbags, rollout wheels and tires. What do we do with all this stuff? The real question is. . .what DON'T we do!!

You'll experience cross-training that involves circuits and intervals. You'll be working on joint mobility, slinging kettlebells, doing Turkish get-ups, rowing, dipping, pulling yourself up to that bar, deadliftting, squatting, pressing, power cleaning, and anything else we can think of to make you functionally strong. We warm up, work out, and spend our last 15 minutes of the hour tweaking foundational movements.

Since the holiday season is upon us and since many of us have yet to meet in person during our various Meetup's, it was suggested by a member that we have a "meet and greet" so everyone can get to know one another. Sounds like an excellent idea, so I have put it on the calendar.

After checking out some reviews and trying to find somewhere convenient and one that offers a varied menu AND not too expensive, I thought we may want to try out Engine 11. In the former Firehouse # 11 for the City of Atlanta, this moderately priced restaurant is getting good reviews online. I thought we might judge for ourselves.

Having more lunch fair than breakfast this restaurant does have varied offerings and I noted quite a few "heart healthy" items! To see the menu, the website is: www.engine11atl.com.

We may have a large group, and though I plan to ask if they can offer us separate checks, if not each person is responsible for their own payment. Please tip also, having been a server in an earlier life I know how hard of work it is and with the downturn in the economy I am sure that industry has been affected even more so.
