S.373 and H.R. 2811 are the bills that will be considered on the senate floor very soon!!!

S373 aka the ‘Python Ban’ Flew through “Mark Up” before the Senate Environment & Public Works (EPW) Committee on Thursday, December 10, 2009. If passed as written this bill could add ALL 40 species of Python, and possibly Boa Constrictor to the Injurious Wildlife list of the Lacey Act. This would ban the import, export and interstate transport of ALL animals listed. Last week USARK led a very successful grass roots campaign to oppose S373 in the Senate EPW committee. The Reptile Nation weighed in and the committee got our message. Now the bill will go to “Mark Up” where it can be amended.

Calling on all the committee members again may not be the best way to influence them. They know what we want and how many people in the Reptile Nation care about this issue. We don’t feel that just calling them again will be effective. USARK is calling for a MASSIVE email campaign directed to all major media outlets to try and draw attention to the issue. If we can generate 10’s of thousands of emails we will create a media story that will bring attention to this issue that politicians and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) don’t want. This has to be a massive effort. We are facing annihilation as an industry and hobby. NOW is the time to stand up and make a difference. Every single person who participates WILL make a difference!

A high end reputable breeder has a waiting list.
Their dogs are spoken for before the dogs are even mated. So if you go to AJC and someone is selling a litter they are not a reputable breeder, just a licensed breeder or BYB (maybe). Reputable breeders don't advertise, PERIOD. They don't find buyers, buyers find them. So I can say with great confidence that if not for BYB's and licensed breeder 97% of people would not own a dog at all. I'm not saying this to make myself seem better than anyone else. I am not filthy rich. I bought him 4 years ago before the economy went straight to hell.

I am just so sick of people complaining about $100. That's less than a family of 4 spends at the grocery store in a week. This pet is like your child right, a member of your family. You won't spend $100, to have a forever friend. STOP TALKING ABOUT THINGS YOU HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF. So, you're saying that only mutts get sent to shelters? Only mutts have trust issues and health problems?

Of my local shelters, at least half the dogs there are purebreds: Huskies, Malamutes, Beagles, Pugs, Labradors, Cocker Spaniels, Shelties, Neapolitan Mastiffs, Boxers, Jack Russells, Pomeranians, Dachshunds, etc. And, of course, there are the ever-present Pit Bulls.

ANY dog can wind up with trust issues, due to its lack of socialization or other causes. It's not exclusive to mutts. All dogs can have health problems, due to bad breeding or other causes. That, too, is not exclusive to mutts.

And in regard to your view of supply and demand....Because lots of people want a particular breed, and therefore lots of people are endlessly breeding their dogs to try and make money from them, it tells me that those individuals are not concerned about the QUALITY of their puppies. They're not interested in bettering the breed, which is what a conscientious breeder is out for. They're out to make a quick buck from the sale of the puppies. A good breeder is concerned with the betterment of the breed. So, quite a few of these people here on craigslist who are selling litters of puppies ARE just in it for the "sh*ts and giggles," as you so eloquently described it.....just after a buck.

He's a 2 year old Miniature Australian Shepherd. He weighs about 20lbs and blue merle and has two blue eyes. He was pick of the litter, and boy does it show! He is smarter than any dog I've ever, ever seen, and sooo affectionate! He's had obedience and beginning agility training and done well with both. He's a fantastic companion and has always been incredibly loyal and... well, great.

So.. what's the deal? Well, I'm a college student and swamped with work, school, and everything else that I have to do to pay for student loans, so... I feel sorry for the little guy.

He is crate trained, potty trained, and rarely barks. He IS protective, but only with some warning barks and growls at the door when he hears noise. He's in perfect health, comes with bunches of food, toys, and almost a year's worth of heartworm meds. He's had all of his shots until June or so, and you can have the records for that as well. He is neutered and CKC registered. He's been very well cared for and I certainly want that to continue! His adoption fee is $300.

He's been raised around cats and does great, but LOVES other dogs. The ideal family would have another dog, actually. He really loves bigger dogs, too. He has a lot of energy, so an active household and yard are preferable. A fenced yard would make him one very content pet and you one very pleased owner :) He ADORES kids!

My ideal family would have:
Time
A Fenced Yard
Child/Children
The interest in playing and teaching him new tricks! He LOVES learning new things!

You people act like folks are breeding just for sh*ts and giggles, it's not the case. First and foremost, it's called supply and demand. If it's in demand, someone will supply it. Second, the shelters may be overrun with dogs, but it's not everyones fault on CL. Personally, I don't want a mutt. I don't want someone elses 4 year old dog that got sent to the shelter bc they neglected it for 3.5 of those four years, and now has trust issues and most likely, health problems. If you were to go to the car dealership to buy a Honda, you expect to get a f#cking Honda, no? What if the salesman said "Oh, we have Hondas alright. But only if you want one that has a Mitsubishi bumper, an Infiniti spoiler, and tires that belong on a F-150. "

You'd say screw that and walk away. I mean, seriously, are your lives SO MUNDANE that you have NOTHING better to do than post about breeding ALL. DAY. LONG.

You call it educating the public, I call it annoying the public. Get a job, and a life. If you feel THAT bad for the dogs in the shelters, start a rescue. Go adopt yourself. Go adopt, THEN try to push the dog on other unsuspecting folks. You'll get it, eventually.

If ppl do buy dogs and they end up back on here, then it is a PERSONAL problem--its not YOUR problem and it damn sure isn't the breeders fault. And just FYI- ppl really do have circumstances come up that prohibit them from taking care of their animals. At least they are trying to place them on a classifieds site instead of dumping them at the end of dirt roads.

For the record, I'm not a breeder. But I also have a purebred dog, and before her, I had one for 15 years. I've never had anything more than minor, routine problems with either of them. I thought that we had found him a good home, However Max suffered major separation problem from beign away from me and went pee pee everywhere even if the family just looked at him. It is going to take someone with a lot of love, and devotion to help max over come his separation issues but once he does he will be a life long companion. He's great with my two other dogs and 3 children.. I'm just raising 3 children and one on the way and my husband is working in Vermont and I just dont have the time to care for him like he needs to be.

Under no circumstances should they be around children as they are known to lack patience. They attack most commonly when being bathed or when a sudden noise occurs. They were bred as Military Hunting Dogs, again not recommended.

If a presa canario weighs over 175lbs it was the result of irresponsible breeding over time to gain a dog with only size. Case in point. Last year I posted under the FREE section that people could come to my home and rake up my leaves to use as mulch in their gardens - but there was a 6 bag limit per family.

I received a couple of emails from people laughing. More importantly, I got several emails from people saying, ' oh my god, i burned my leaves, I had no idea they were worth money.'

Then - a landslide of people starting posting ads trying to sell people the pleasure of raking and bagging leaves, then taking them home.

We are amongst idiots.
