Samcheok, Gangwon June 2 - August 20, 2010 September 1 - November 26, 2010
Samcheok is a city of tourism with beautiful beaches and a cave. But the standard of living is poor and especially, education facilities are not enough for the local community. The host organization is a local church and they run local children's center to provide educational and cultural opportunities to children. They offer not only studying with books but also various extracurricular activities to them. Musical team and Korean traditional music performance team, which are particular offering of this center, perform a road show for local people. The host wants to give the kids an intercultural experience through the volunteers' participation. You can also feel the typical warmth and kindness of rural Korean community.
Volunteer work: Together with Korean volunteer(s), the international participants will organize and manage cultural and education programs such as foreign languages (mainly English), outdoor activities, etc. for the children who attend the local Children's Center. The children at the center are mainly elementary school students and few middle school students. They normally stay at the center after school, from 2 pm until around 8 pm.
Any kind of activities and ideas are welcome, as long as they provide the local children with opportunities for cultural exchange. The local children are very open and interested about the different countries in the world.

Our SafeRide operations recently went high tech and started using an GPS based software program to assist in dispatching drivers. This system vastly improves our efficiency but we need a large monitor to track all the drivers.

Since our non-profit mission is to pro-actively prevent all types of impaired driving, we have many ways that you can help make a difference. Non-driving opportunities include things like helping out in our volunteer dispatch office, being a part of a volunteer street team creating awareness or you can help us with an event or festival.
If you have a valid drivers license and a car you could become a key part of one of our SafeRide teams of drivers. As a chase car driver you will work with an experienced partner to help get impaired people AND their cars home too from local bars and restaurants in the Atlanta area. WE ARE NOT A TAXI. No one ever gets in your car with you except for your partner, which is a SafeRide America employee. We need volunteer drivers to drive their own cars (gas is reimbursed and mileage is tax-deductible) to act as chase car drivers from 8pm to 4am, 7 nights a week.
Here's a breakdown of what you'll be doing. When you arrive at our office, you'll be partnered up with a SafeRide employee. You will drive the employee in your car to a location we have been called to. You drop off the employee, the employee drives the client home and you follow along. Then you pick up the employee and go on to the next requested location. It's that easy.
If you are doing court appointed community service, we make is simple and quick to get started and provide web based tracking of your volunteer hours. When your hours are completed we will provide a letter (at no cost to you) on our letterhead verifying your volunteer hours for whomever necessary.

Emory University School of Medicine is conducting a research study to investigate the emotional and physical causes of depression in men and women.
Participants must be 18 - 65 years of age and physically healthy.
Participants will receive a psychiatric evaluation, a physical exam, and laboratory testing at no cost.
If eligible, participants will receive either an FDA-approved medication for depression OR talk-therapy, at no cost.
Participation lasts 12-24 weeks

While current antidepressant medications are often effective, many patients treated for major depressive disorder (MDD) do not achieve symptom remission with antidepressant monotherapy. The investigational medication being evaluated in this study (lisdexamfetamine dimesylate, a prodrug of dextroamphetamine) was initially developed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study will investigate the efficacy and safety of the investigational medication as augmentation to an antidepressant. As a physician conducting this research, I wanted to inform you of this study in the event that a patient in your care may qualify for participation. Qualified participants will receive study related medical evaluations and investigational medication at no cost. Reimbursement for time and travel may also be provided.
To be eligible for this study, patients must
meet the criteria below:
• Adult outpatient aged 18-55 years
• Primary diagnosis of non-psychotic MDD (single or recurrent)
• Not receiving treatment for the current depressive episode OR receiving treatment for the current depressive episode and considered not to have achieved remission following an adequate trial of the current therapy
• Subject does NOT have a current comorbid psychiatric disorder associated with significant symptoms (inclusive of ADHD)
I am attempting to gather twenty current or former workers (who left employment within the last calendar year) to talk to me confidentially about their jobs.Particpation entails one audio-recorded telephone interviews that last approximately 45 minutes scheduled at the convenience of participants. During this, I will ask several questions gauging your experiences with the agency. Confidentiality is assured. No one will be identified by name, location, or job title. Participants will be referred to as Respondent 1, 2, 3 etc. only. No personally identifying data will be included in the project at any point, and I will retain all information. I am the only individual who will know your personal information. All exchanges will be treated as personal and confidential. This study has been approved by the Internal Review Board of Georgia State University. The final thesis will be published by GSU.
(I'm a 34 yr old mother of 4, I've been unemployed for 4 months, going through a divorce, and recently lost my truck. I've worked since the age of 13 and never been in such a mess as i am now. i knew the job market was rough, but i thought by now i would have found something, even McDonald's or Kroger. I live in Decatur and have run out of time to pay my Georgia Power electric bill. I live with my girlfriend, both of live on meager Disability Income. This is very difficult amount to live on and subsequently we've fallen way behind on our electric bill. We have not had heat for 3 winters now, but use a small portable heater to keep at least one room warm when it is cold outside. Of course this heater requires electricity and I have until end of day, December 10th to pay $317 or my power will be disconnected. I have begun the process of applying for Food Stamps, but this is not a simple process, so obviously we are fairly threadbare in terms of financial resources.

International volunteer projects have been running for many years in this region and there is now a very strong network of local partners and local volunteers. Volunteers have cooperated with a large number of schools, orphanages, institutions for special education and the local authorities to develop projects that are meaningful for the development of this rural town. The international volunteer projects will focus on rural development, environmental protection and children. The volunteers will spread awareness about environmental protection and solid waste management to schoolchildren. They will also be involved in activities such as creative education and teaching basic English and Math through games, art and songs with the children from the local schools, including disabled kids (physically and/or mentally). The work might include some physical work for the renovation and betterment of the schools (painting, building a playground, etc.).

You don’t need to live like this and that’s why researchers at Emory University are conducting a study to evaluate whether an investigational medication will improve the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy for panic disorder. With your help, we’ll be that much closer to improving treatment.
If you currently have panic attacks and fear having additional attacks, you may be eligible to participate. Individuals diagnosed with certain psychiatric disorders, such as bipolar disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder would not qualify.
D-cycloserine is a drug originally used in the treatment of tuberculosis. This drug has recently been found to enhance certain forms of psychotherapy in previous studies. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the combination of the virtual reality and D-cycloserine will reduce PTSD symptoms when compared to being treated with therapy alone (in combination with placebo) or with therapy combined with an anti-anxiety pill (alprazolam).
Interested individuals will be evaluated at a screening visit where a diagnostic interview and rating scales will be conducted to determine eligibility. In general, we are looking for healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 65, who have had symptoms of PTSD for at least a month, and served in Iraq. Participants will receive one of three types of treatments. The three treatment groups include 6 sessions of virtual reality therapy for all individuals, and participants will be randomized to take one of the following medications before their therapy treatment: D-Cycloserine, alprazolam, or a placebo pill. Assessments will be conducted pre-, during, and post-treatment to evaluate symptom and mood improvement.

Kundapur is a town situated on the west coast of Karnataka near the beach, and very close to the Western Ghats (a mountain ridge). The Western Ghats is India's prime zone for bio-diversity, known for its number of animal and plant species in this region. A Marine Turtle protection project has been started here in co-operation with the Forest Department of the State of Karnataka. Over a 60-kilometer stretch of beach, surveys are conducted and the turtle nests are protected until the hatching of the eggs. In 2007, more than 1500 baby turtles reached the ocean safely thanks to the efforts of international volunteers. This year again we continue these efforts. The projects will also focus on spreading awareness to the general public and in the schools about the importance of turtles in the bio-diversity.

This project has been running successfully since 2004. The Youth House School is a small education center for disadvantaged street children and children coming from a poor fishing village, located in the outskirts of Hanoi. The international volunteers will help run the school and will be responsible for keeping the school clean, cooking free lunch for the children, and teaching them basic things about their countries, health, etc. The volunteers will also organize some leisure activities for youth after school. This is a time for cultural exchange and embracing new relationships. The international volunteers will work together with a team of local volunteers, led by a group leader. The volunteers will teach around 15 children every day. Remember, the children are not used to rules and structure in their households, so volunteers must try to implement this by setting an example. The Youth House is also a place where young local people and international volunteers come to explore the cultural diversity, by teaching the children together or organizing leisure activities, such as taking the children to the swimming pool. These activities are combined with projects to help disadvantaged people at the Fisher Village, who are very poor and live in slum-boats on the Red river. This is done by giving them food, medicines, water filters (for clean drinking water), toothpaste, second-hand warm clothes and free showers in winter, etc. The Red River is the biggest river in Vietnam. The delta is located in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. The city continues to expand with many people coming from the countryside into the urban area. This however, is an expensive endeavor with the government imposing a tax on people coming from the rural area to prevent a massive influx of people. Some people decide however to come despite this financial situation and thus must live in house boats at the river to escape from having to pay. Since they do not technically live in Hanoi they must pay for school which is usually free until the age of 12. The entire family must work hours that most people would consider inhumane. The children wander the streets begging and collecting rubbish. An entire family barely makes $2 a day.

Mysore is a city in the state of Karnataka in Southern India. It was the erstwhile capital of the Wodeyar dynasty and is considered the cultural capital of the state. In this project the volunteers will work with different organizations involved in the development of the underprivileged. The slum reality is a big issue in the entire country. The aim is to spread awareness among the people and to give them more instruments to feel confident and free to decide for their future, and for the future of a new generation. The mission of this project is to: • Organize a multi-purpose project to involve the community and sensitize the local people about the Health & Hygiene problems.
• Educate the children to build a better and more conscious society.
• Spread awareness on Women rights issues and social welfare;
• Environmental issues.
• Working with other NGOs in community service projects.
The schedule and the focus of the project will be adapted to the season, the possibilities and the needs of the moment, to improve the achievements in a long-term view.

Vietnam Friendship Village is a treatment/care centre for Agent Orange victims located in Ha Tay Province, which was opened in 1993 to treat children and veterans suffering from the effects of Agent Orange. The children, whose fathers or grandfathers were exposed (causing chromosomal damage) or who were contaminated from their mother’s milk, suffer from a range of difficult conditions. While staying in Vietnam Friendship Village, children and veterans are nourished and are provided with free medical care. The children, who may stay there for several years, receive not only basic education, but also some forms of job training.
The Organic Gardening Project was launched in 2004 with the goal of creating islands of a harmonious approach to agriculture within areas of environmental and human devastation - increasing awareness of the consequences of war and, at the same time, demonstrating positive strategies for healing and living. At this moment, the farm is providing about 60% of the village’s consumption of vegetable. It is expected that it will cover all the needs and there will be products left for sale to raise funds for the village.
Volunteers will help with clearing the site, preparing soil, weeding, planting vegetables and fruit trees, cleaning a fish pond and redecorating the flowers in the garden. Additional activities may include planting trees, moving bricks for construction, collecting garbage and playing with the children or exchanging with local volunteers or farmers.
Discussions among the volunteers about Agent Orange, Vietnamese culture, and other social issues will take place during some of the evenings. In the project from January 25 to February 6, 2010, the volunteers will focus on preparing Tet New Year Festival for the children in the Village. The work then includes redecorating the houses and making of Chung Cake – a traditional cake for this holiday in Vietnam.
