Junior Writer, Journalist, Intern–to-Paid, College Students OK (Atlanta)

A growing multimedia company is looking for writers (journalist, analysts, commentators) junior/trainee level, interns (upgrade to paid, directly based on successful commercial results).

The position is ideal for college students or college age people, not necessarily writing/journalism major, not necessarily with a lot of commercial writing experience but with a lot of passion, determination, inspiration to write, discipline (able to dedicate time to train and work), some business practices awareness.

Writers/journalists with developed skills are welcome but because the work is going to be paid per particular results (readership) only, you will have to stick with the conditions for all candidates/interns and only start getting paid when your work starts to be read and liked by our readers (no salary or contract deals offered).

More specifically, while the position can accept wide area of writing subject topics/areas, we are most interested in writers in the subject area of (in order of priority for us:) city life entertainment, city night life, live music events, bands, clubs, small stages, performing arts, art venues, food (restaurants), shopping, attractions, singles life and issues, lifestyles issues, fun activities centers (parks, amusement parks), etc.

Just to emphasize our "sweet spot": entertainment, live music, bands, clubs, bars, food. So the position is ideal for someone not only who wants to be a good writer, journalist but possibly with personal enthusiasm to Atlanta night life, music, indie music, popular night clubs, concerts, etc. (The position can potentially let you get perks in to the life style as free entries etc. but this is not the main point). Strong preference in your writing style to one particular art (music etc.) style, life style will not be considered a plus.You will need the journalistic type generalist in you here.

Do not let the above list discourage you to apply. If you think you have aspiration for commercial writing (the style of articles for magazines, newspapers, online publications) we may find a media for expression venue for you. Other areas that we definitely have interest in are: clean energy, ecology (environment), clean energy technology, business, education (especially college and university degrees) etc.

We have multiple openings for this position but it is very likely that we will pick a very few (possibly one) candidate(s) to spearhead certain effort and potentially develop as team leads.

We can not emphasize enough that almost no specific requirement or expectation mentioned should be a single reason to discourage you to apply since creativity, innovation, inspiration, belief and ability to show what you have and can is more important in this position than anything else.

Position Functions:
- write, article style (magazine, newspaper, online publication); cover events, places (businesses, venues), subject areas mentioned above;
- research facts, opinions, commentary to support articles;
- follow educational resources to educate and train yourself as a better writer;
- use a pen name (pseudonym) or a real name to identify your work (articles) and to grow as an expert in your subject area(s);
- work towards creating/growing likable, readable, attractive artistic (and business) style and image;
- be disciplined and productive with work; though there will be no formal hours and set required hours, and most of the work can be done at your place, your work has to show dedicated weekly amount of effort; this will come in exchange for all benefits (see further down); your internship contract can not last if this expectation is not satisfied;

Required abilities, skills, qualifications
- since this is a trainee, intern position a lot of skills will be built on the job but still some are expected or desired for you to have now:
- natural willingness to write; this positions is not for somebody who has not been inspired to write before and expects to be convinced in that this might be a job; even if you have nothing to show as writing experience/portfolio you should have at some point decided to write your own, commentaries, analysis, long explanations on a topic, school work, work that could have been readable publicly. If you have not done this it will probably be very difficult for you to get this position or if you get it to be good at it.
- write well - grammatically and stylistically; in the process of application we may ask you to send current work or write sample essays or articles on a topic;
- be efficiently communicative at work; though most of the work you can do at your own hours, and place you will be required to communicate well (mainly email) with managers and other staff, potentially pears, report on work progress; this is one skill that does not come naturally to the artistic type - though the position is very creative and can be related to "freelance" style work, we specifically expect you to be more of a business type, business oriented person at this position; the one aspect this position is very different from freelance work is that you will need to show relatively constant dedication with certain hours (negotiable and flexible) per week; after all this is a trainee, intern position where you will earn credit to building your skills;
- manage your time well, dedicate time to work etc.; refer to the point above;
- your work is going to be publicly available and you will covering real events, facts and places (some room for fiction writing available in some subject areas); though you can use a pen name (alias, pseudonym) you have to be publicly engaged and responsible; your articles are going to be reviewed and screened before publication but you still have to work with the expectation that your work is going to be publicly available; the value of controversy not critiqued here, but most of our media is factoid oriented as opposed to opinion so there will be less room for judging and assessing and more for reporting and commenting;
- some expectation, though not critical, for you to be a self promoter; i.e. this position is work for the media, a media brand more specifically; you will do better at this position if you are able, through the means of your social network non-formal, non-technical, or otherwise (online social networks), or contacts that are note necessarily your social network to publicize and make famous your work and the brand you will be working under/for.
- be willing to work and enthusiastic about working with a young brand that will be about popularity and coolness; and see the future opportunities for someone who started early with the brand; - this is very critical for you success;

Additional Non-critical Qualifications That Will Give You An Advantage:
- interests and understanding of advertising, the media business industry and business in general; we are a commercial, for-profit media brand so your business acumen can show off here;
- skill in using the internet social networks for event and news promotion;
- you being interesting and popular person; remember this is not a requirement; we realize writing and creativity sometimes go very well with the introvert types;
- sense of humor; we thought we should put this as an absolute requirement but it will be hard to assess in the application process, so let see how this goes ...

Benefits
As an intern the main general benefit will be skills building, but see our opinion here and checkout the opportunity for paid work:
- grow with a young brand and potentially grasp lead (manager, editor, business manager) opportunities;
- skills building;
- building a portfolio of visible, commercial work for future reference;
- actual commercial work for future reference - you can put in your resume and get referrals, recommendations;
- paid work (see further down)

Paid Work
Though the position will start as an internship, your work can and will be paid based on contribution value and business results for the media brand as your effort accumulates. In actual fact we expect the most successful applicants to be ones who look at this assignment commercially and with future expectations to earn money for their effort. The payment for work will be directly based in results. That is the readership of your work is going to be assessed through specific metrics and paid as soon as money is earned by your work. Can be a perfect supplemental earning opportunity for students but also possible to be your main earning opportunity if you grow in to the job/industry.

How to Apply

Please submit resume and cover letter along the lines of this ad.

Travel Writer (Atlanta)

This month, we are hiring a freelance writer based near Atlanta to write about weekend getaways and urban destinations.

Trazzler is a website where users meander through a world of trips—hand-picked, concise, compellingly written slices of life that pull the reader into a real experience: a hotel stay, walk, adventure, spa, restaurant, ice cream stand, pony ride... really anywhere that travel can take you. And that’s where you come in. Each Trazzler trip is dominated by a photo that sets the scene so that your writing can tell the rest of the story.

How to Apply
Since Trazzler is quite different from other travel sites, the best way that we have found to scout out new writers is to get a sample trip. Our ideal candidate would be someone who understands what makes Trazzler tick, can easily navigate the content creation tools (and let us know when something doesn't make sense or could be better), and—most important—has a unique and personal way of traveling to share with fellow Trazzlers. Take a look at our writing guide and other help docs if you have any questions.

Instructions:
1. Sign up, if you haven't already.
2. Click on "Write a Trip" at the top of the page (you must be signed in).
3. Write a trip about the place you would like to cover (shoot for 65-150 words).

Communications Manager – Training and Certification
Flexible location

The New Teacher Project (TNTP) helps school districts and states fulfill the promise of public education by ensuring that all students—especially those from high-need communities—get excellent teachers. A national nonprofit organization founded by teachers, TNTP recognizes that although teachers matter more than any other school factor in student success, the nation’s education systems are not aligned with the goal of an effective teacher in every classroom. In response, TNTP develops customized programs and policy interventions that enable education leaders to diagnose their teacher quality challenges and find, develop and keep great teachers. Since its inception in 1997, TNTP has recruited or trained approximately 33,000 teachers—mainly through its highly selective Teaching Fellows™ programs—benefiting an estimated 4.8 million students. TNTP has also released a series of acclaimed studies of the policies and practices that affect the quality of the nation’s teacher workforce, most recently including The Widget Effect: Our National Failure to Acknowledge and Act on Differences in Teacher Effectiveness (2009). Today TNTP is active in more than 25 cities, including Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, New Orleans, New York, and Oakland, among others. For more information, please visit www.tntp.org.
