Studer A80 MK II 2" 16-track multitrack reel-to-reel tape machine. This is one of the most respected and widely used multitrack decks ever made—countless classic records were tracked on A80s. It delivers true tape character with excellent headroom and compression when pushed, while remaining flatter and more accurate than many comparable machines (Ampex, Otari, Tascam, etc.). This particular machine is somewhat rare, running at 7.5 and 15 IPS.
We acquired this deck from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) about three years ago and have restored it as time allowed. The transport was functional when received, and several channels were working, but the machine has since been fully gone through and brought back to factory spec.
Work performed includes:
New pinch roller from Terry’s Rubber Rollers
All electrolytic capacitors replaced in all 16 audio channels and transport cards
All VU meter bulbs replaced
Record and Ready lamps replaced with LEDs (no more costly bulb replacements)
All switches and controls cleaned
End-of-tape sensor rebuilt with new photocell and LED, sensitivity properly set
All function button lamps (play, record, etc.) replaced
Corrected EQ cards on 3 channels that previously had incorrect 15/30 IPS cards installed
Full factory-spec calibration of transport and all 16 channels (bias, EQ, tape tension) for both speeds
Both cooling fans replaced
Missing hardware replaced where needed
Full test run on all channels at both speeds with a complete tape pass
Approximately 120 hours of labor went into this restoration, plus parts. Roughly 350 capacitors were replaced in total. The machine has been thoroughly tested and is operating properly.
Serious, well-maintained A80s don’t come up often—this one is ready to work.
