I charge a flat fee of $250 to overhaul/restore your bike. Price includes new stainless steel cables, new cable housings, and new ball bearings. Tires, tubes, rim strips, brake pads, bartape, and any damaged or defective components are extra.
I am an independent bicycle mechanic and not a bike shop. I'm just a guy with a thing for older bikes. Btw, I'm not a person that paints bikes. I believe that old bikes should look like they have lived a long life and show-off that they are still a great riding machine, with scuffs, scratches, and all.
So if you are buying a used vintage bike, or want to ride your dad's old bike that's been sitting for years, I urge you to have an overhaul done to it. A lot of riders think that if the wheels spin, the gears shift, and the tires hold air, then their old bike is fine, let's ride!
That might be fine for a bike that's under 10 years old, But for a vintage bike, it is essential to get a complete overhaul done to it so the bike will survive for decades to come.
Along with disassembly, cleaning, and re-building of the bike, an overhaul concentrates on the internal bearings that make things spin or turn. It is critical that these stay greased and clean, are correctly tightened, and have no damaged bearings. Dry, dirty, or damaged bearings, along with loose or overly tightened bearings, will damage internal parts that can be expensive or non-existent to replace. Old grease gets hard and combined with road grit becomes an abrasive that is constantly grinding-away at the internal cups and cones where those bearings roll. Bearing issues can cause failures... in turning the handlebars, pedaling, or wheel operation... and can be dangerous for you the rider.
What I do:
The bike will be completely disassembled. All the components and the drivetrain will be removed and deep-cleaned. The fork will be removed and the headset bearings replaced and greased. The wheelhub bearings will be replaced and then greased. The bottom bracket will be overhauled with new bearings and grease. The bearings will be correctly tightened so that they roll smoothly but have no play or looseness. The internal cups and cones where all these bearings travel will be deep-cleaned to provide the cleanest and smoothest surface possible. The wheels will be trued, rims and spokes will be individually cleaned, and the wheelhubs will be buttery smooth. The frame will be washed, cleaned, and polished. Light rust on chrome parts will be dealt with. The brake calipers and levers, shifters, derailleurs, cranks, chainrings, and drivetrain will all be disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt. There's not a nut or bolt on the bike that I won't touch.
I supply the cables(stainless steel) and cable housings(lined). You will be responsible for the cost of brake pads, or new tires and tubes, also any components that might be worn out, like a chain, or bar tape. Btw, if anything extra needs replacing I do not charge any extra for the installation of those replacement parts.
Bike shops in Atlanta can run weeks behind, and most shops don't have critical vintage parts. They also don't have the time or experience to do a thorough job on an old bike. Most shops will not even wash your bike or the components.
Send pics of the bike. Take one pic from the left side and one from the right and I'll let you know what I think.
There are some exclusions to the $250 price, like very high-end bikes. Also, tubular tires, sometimes called sew-ups(you'll know if you have them) are not included. Those are almost obsolete and the labor on those is priced separately.
Because of the vast amount of spam I receive, please put the word DOG into your email and I will respond.
Btw, if you want to sell your old bike get in touch.
