LARGE JACK SCREW for Arresting Hook for FJ-2 - F86 Carrier Aircraft

According to a eBayer who did some research, the unit is from a FJ-2 1950s vintage carrier based fighter which means it's probably for lowering and raising the arresting hook for carrier landings. The FJ-2 is a actually a F86 modified for carrier operations.

It also could be for controllling the horizontal stabilazer on a large aircraft.

And another eBayer said:

"Hello,

Neat piece of history!

While I did not work on any FJ2 or F86’s I did work on many aircraft that were designed for carrier use.

All that I worked on used hydraulics to lower and raise the tail hook.

The shock force of landing and stopping an aircraft on a carrier is tremendous.

The Acme thread on the shaft and the mating gears in the drive would not last long in that application.

This was probably used to position the horizontal stabilizers to control the pitch (nose up, level, nose down attitude) of the aircraft while in flight.

As my dad used to tell me, any landing you can walk away from is a good landing….".

The box is labeled Pitch Drive. The jack screw is 32 and ½ inches in length with a screw diameter of about 1 ¼ inches. The drive motor is labeled:

North American Aviation
0.5 HP 23 Amps 26 VDC
30 sec on, 3 min off
Part # GH 129-550
Sierra Tool & Mfg
Glendale CA

The unit looks new or remanufactured but I have no way of testing the motor so it is being sold as is. It is packed in the original US Govt. packing and weighs over 25 pounds.
