This was a working man's guitar for 34+ years. I bought it from the second owner, my old business partner and it has been in its case in my closet for almost 30 years.
I believe the original color ordered was a Duco Nitro Castilian Red before Fender began standard colors in 1960.
When the bridge pickup failed, the nitro was rough and the finish was taken to natural, a modern style 6 saddle bridge and different pickup installed.
I HAVE THE ORIGINAL BRIDGE AND PICKUP, which needs repair/rewind, the ORIGINAL NECK PICKUP is installed.
The control plate, knobs and switch are original, the pots are not. If 66 year old pots are your deal, they are about $400 online.
The quality pickguard is from "Paul C's" in San Francisco.
The NECK is in EXCELLENT condition as are THE ORIGINAL TUNERS which remain.
I believe the output cup and strap buttons are original
The BODY is VERY CLEAN, with only one scratch at the top of the front above the bridge.
Two luthiers have told me it will easily steam out.
The action and intonation were superb. To photograph the bridge pocket,I had to extend the saddles to remove the bridge screws, which are original. I recorded measurements for each saddle position.
Being a painted body, it is 2 piece but the grain is so well matched the seam is only readily perceptible from the butt end of the body.
The neck pocket is such a tight fit, the penciled neck date is worn but legible. The bridge pocket date is excellent.
The original case after working for 35 years is well worn but fully functional. It is an eye catcher as a genuine relic.
The edges of the lining are loose and could easily be re-glued.
I was 10 years old when this case was born...Personally, I like the 65 years of character.
I HAVE PRICED THIS TO SELL...I have already knocked off the 20% commission for a dealer
With a refin and the pickup rewound I think it is easily a $20-21K package at Carter's in Nashville. Check their 1960 refin W/O Original case for $22,500.
I never found the time to get Fralin to rewind the pickup and my luthier pal no longer does nitro.
But if it doesn't sell, I will find the time and take the body to Athens.
