The very first mandolin by Billy Chapman Strings of Columbia, SC! This one is in the style of a Martin bent-top with a bit of extra decoration. Spruce top, maple back and neck with a touch of birdseye, thinking the darker accents, rose and pickguard may be walnut.
It's a nicely-made instrument on the whole, remarkably so for his first, with the only real flaws around the back rim binding and end strip, where they aren't fit perfectly. Could have moved over time due to improper storage/humidification, but they don't move when flexed and there are no cracks or warping, so I suspect they just weren't cut/fit correctly when glued up.
In good shape with moderate wear, neck is straight and plays well. Lightweight and lively tone, excellent for Celtic, old time, folk, classical. Not a bluegrass screamer but still has good volume. Narrow nut at ~1", V neck profile.
Not a lot of info about his acoustic mandos out there (he's most well-known for his electrics), but last time his website was up circa '06, they started around $2500. I'm open to serious offers.
Would also be interested in getting in touch with Billy Chapman if anyone has current contact info. Figure he might like to have this one back or at least enjoy seeing it again!
