Vintage Cowan, Chicago, IL Mahogany & Oak Antique Desk

Cowan Furniture Co. Model Number 5787 136, probably manufactured in the late 1800’s (it is not in the Cowan Catalog that was published after they moved to the large facility in Chicago, which was in the early 1900’s). It has beautifully carved mahogany legs. There is a nice work surface that is between drawers on the left and right sides – there is a large center drawer with a lock (the key is missing). Two smaller drawers at the top on the left and the right add to the elegance of this desk. The drawers have beautiful, dovetailed joinery. The center drawer is stamped with “Cowan.” There is a “Cowan” label on the back of the desk in the center. Cowan Furniture Company was a premium Chicago Furniture Manufacturer in the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s.
This desk belonged to a Marchant Marine Captain who was a good friend and mentor of my Grandfather. He used it on the ships under his command during his career with the Merchant Marines. The Captain gave it to my Grandfather sometime in the late 1920’s or 1930’s when he retired, and it has been in my family ever since.
The desk is in exceptionally good condition considering its age. There are nicks & small scratches here and there, but no severe damage anywhere. The knobs have chips and wear & I had planned to replace them if I kept the desk. One of the knobs on a small drawer is broken off. There is some wear on the edges of the finished surfaces. The desk is very sturdy, and the legs are attached with screws that will make it easy for shipping.
